Overview :

The District School Nurse (RN) serves as the lead health professional within the school district. This role is responsible for coordinating and overseeing school health services, providing direct nursing care, training, and supervising Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) assigned to individual schools, maintaining accurate student health records, and ensuring compliance with the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) reporting requirements. The District Nurse promotes student health, safety, and wellness to support academic success.

Qualifications:

• Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the State of Tennessee
• Nursing experience, preferably working with children
• Ability to address health care procedures that may be required during school hours and necessary to provide student access to the educational program as required by the Tennessee Code Annotated.
• Meet the necessary health and physical requirements and be fingerprinted
• Supervisory or training experience preferred
• Ability to train, supervise, and evaluate LPNs effectively
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations related to school health services
• Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, families, and community partners
• Proficiency in maintaining health records and preparing reports

Responsibilities:

• Provide professional nursing services to students in accordance with state laws, district policies, and professional standards of practice.
• Serve as the lead nurse for the district, coordinating school health services across all campuses.
• Train, mentor, and provide ongoing support to school-based LPNs; monitor performance and ensure adherence to nursing standards and district procedures.
• Conduct health assessments, screenings, and evaluations as required by state and district guidelines.
• Develop and implement individualized health plans (IHPs) for students with chronic health conditions.
• Administer medications and perform nursing procedures in compliance with physician orders, parent authorization, and district policy.
• Maintain accurate, confidential student health records in compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and state regulations.
• Prepare and submit required health reports to the Tennessee Department of Education (TDOE) and other state/local agencies.
• Collaborate with administrators, teachers, counselors, and parents to support student health and educational success.
• Provide health education and training for staff, students, and families on wellness, disease prevention, and emergency procedures.
• Serve as a liaison between the school district, community health providers, and public health agencies.
• Monitor communicable diseases and coordinate responses to public health concerns within the district.
• Ensure compliance with immunization requirements and maintain district-wide immunization records.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Schools or designee.
• Respond to any emergency medical situation on any school site.
• Coordinate and monitor the vision and hearing screenings.
